There are often long weeks in our work schedule here in the Northwest. With the 4th of July now behind us, it is another end of yet another short holiday week. How can we possibly we get it all done? Of course, we are a little stressed; we spend a lot of time at our desks getting it done. And we know that by Monday we will be going full steam again. One thing is for sure, stress can get to the best of us.
Thankfully we have both choices and priorities. And we can do a number of things to manage all of our activities. Yet stress can still create mental and physical chaos. Stress is usually driven by acute challenges.
Look at these six ways to manage stress:
- Planning is essential: It is important to schedule your work day every day. When the unpredictable happens you can restart again.
- Step away: Take a five minute break. Walk outside. Go up and down stairs. At least stand up and stretch.
- Always be positive: Attitude is everything. List all of the good things that have been accomplished. Value yourself and your relationships.
- Disconnect devices: No one has to be constantly connected. We do not have to react to messages in real time. Use devices like laptops and tablets wisely so the true focus can be on process and results.
- Get some sleep: Every one of us needs sleep. If we feel tired, we must react to it and try to get a good night’s rest.
- Make driving good therapy: Commuting time be a little less stressful and more productive with an e-book or music in the background. Use this time productively whenever possible.
Stress can be managed with the right focus. There are a multitude of stressful moments each day, but as Mr. Carnegie once said in his classic, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, “(Have a) deep, driving desire to learn, and a vigorous determination to stop worrying and start living!”
